SDACT CAMPAIGN UPDATES FOR MARCH 6, 2008
7:30 PM - New posting : Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, March 6, 2008
Diocese, union trade salvos on the Web
12:00 PM - JUST IN: Click here for a new statement from the Diocesan schools office regarding the next meeting of the Diocesan company union. Although the statement is new, nonetheless, there is nothing new in the Diocese's position.

However, the statement does contain the truthful acknowledgement that, "This program (the company union) is the format for regular dialogue between the Diocese and school employees, and it is the means chosen by Bishop Martino to communicate with his teachers and to ensure their fair treatment."
Once again, we must remark, the only real representation that provides for justice and dignity for workers anywhere is representation which arises from the workers themselves and is freely-chosen by them to be such a vehicle. This is the nexus of the dispute. Until that issue is addressed, there can never be fair treatment for our teachers or any other group of employees.
The statement also addresses disruptions to the educational process. At a meeting sponsored by concerned parents across the Diocese, set for this Sunday, parents will have the opportunity to dialogue directly with teachers about their concerns. We will allow those parents the opportunity to make up their own minds, if they haven't already, where the "responsibility" for any potential disruption lies. We think it is quite clear that the SDACT has taken every step to avoid disruption by seeking dialogue with the Diocese for the past year and a half and by asking only for a vote to determine the form of employee representation. We will continue to avoid disruption whenever possible, just as we have consistently avoided disruption of the school process throughout the thirty-year history of our organization.
